Mayor Biss has a real track record that Evanstonians can count on to deliver for them.

People are eager to remain in and move to Evanston, but that demand is driving up the cost of living here and challenging our community’s treasured diversity. Daniel has worked to address this by:
Passing all four budgets during this mayoral term with no property tax increases
Establishing reduced water rates for low-income Evanstonians
Transforming unused city property into affordable housing adjacent to public transportation
Expanding free parking options
Creating a pilot Guaranteed Income program
Passing a Fair Workweek Ordinance, creating more consistent and reliable scheduling for low-wage workers
Bringing in $30 million from Northwestern to pay for affordable housing initiatives
Passing a Workers’ Retention Ordinance — the first one in the state — ensuring that when large institutions change their food service or hospitality contractors, workers employed under the previous contract won’t lose their jobs
-
Daniel is committed to revitalizing Evanston post-COVID. In his first term, he’s worked to spur needed economic development for our community:
Welcoming The Northlight Theater to its new Evanston home
Partnering with Evanston businesses to create the first Evanston Folk Festival
Establishing the Arrington Lagoon Cafe and bringing new activity to our lakefront
Bringing UL, a globally recognized safety and research firm, to downtown Evanston
-
Climate action has been one of the hallmarks of Daniel’s first term as Mayor. As Mayor, Daniel has spearheaded an ambitious climate agenda including:
Fighting for the Healthy Buildings Ordinance
Investing millions to replace lead pipelines and to help weatherize homes
Securing federal funding and Northwestern dollars to support weatherization, electrification, and solar projects
-
Daniel believes that Evanstonians’ engagement in their government is a unique advantage to our community – whether people agree or disagree. That’s why Daniel has led on making the City of Evanston open to more community members by:
Creating a Participatory Budgeting program to put spending decisions directly in residents’ hands
Soliciting public input before the City budget is drafted to ensure community voices are at the center of the budget process
Conducting meetings in multiple languages and piloting a program of free child care to make government more accessible
-
Daniel has the broad experience needed to move Evanston forward. He’s championed bold policies such as:
Implementing a first-in-the-nation reparations program
Enacting protections in the Trump era by expanding immigrant rights through Evanston’s Welcoming City Ordinance and reaffirming the City’s commitment to the protection of fundamental reproductive healthcare rights
Establishing The Living Room and CARE Teams to proactively provide mental health services and crisis intervention
Approving the Margarita Inn, a homeless shelter located in a former hotel
Passing a first-in-the-state ban on flavored tobacco products
Securing fifteen years of funding for our public schools from Northwestern
